On the first Tuesday of every August, police departments around the country participate in an event known as “National Night Out”. “National Night Out” is an event designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. It has been geared to be both informative and fun.

The Raritan Borough Police Department has participated in this worthwhile event the past few years by orchestrating a community gathering held at the old Washington School field. Joining the police department are organizations and individuals such as fire, rescue, municipal representatives and other government agencies. Displays of emergency equipment: Fire Rescue vehicles, Emergency Medical Service vehicles, Somerset County Prosecutors Office Dive Rescue Team vehicles and boats have been a huge hit. The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit has also attended and demonstrated the skills of the officer and K-9 to the delight of all.

The children in attendance enjoy “dunking” a police officer, playing games, winning prizes and receiving giveaways. Refreshments such as pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, ice cream and water are just a few of the snacks shared with the community. Numerous pamphlets, provided by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, addressing many different topics are available for adults, in addition to information regarding the “Nixle” alert system and representatives from the police department being available to answer any general questions from the public.

The Raritan Borough Police Department could never undertake an event like this without strong sponsorship. We owe many, many thanks to our local businesses, such as TD Bank, Raritan Pizzeria, Stop & Shop, Quick Chek, Arctic Ice, Wegmans, Raritan Bagelicious, and Grand Rental Station. In spite of the difficult economy, they continue to sponsor this event year after year and generously donate their goods and services. We thank them for being such an integral part of the “Night.”

The Raritan Borough Police Department also would like to thank everyone who has attended our event in past years. We appreciate the friendships and personal relationships that have formed and we will continue to strive to keep our community a safe and enjoyable place to live. We hope you enjoy the photographs from past National Night Out events. The Raritan Borough Police Department looks forward to seeing you at our next “National Night Out.”
